Upcoming Holiday Events

Dear Parents,
We are so excited for our upcoming classroom Thanksgiving celebration, this Wednesday.  Every child is part of a group and will be responsible to work together to create a dish for our event.  Parents are welcome to come at noon, when all will be ready to enjoy.   Please have your child show the paper they filled out with their group that shows what they have agreed to bring to school on Wednesday.  We request that students stay at school long enough to clean up and enjoy some exciting science experiments after recess.

Conferences
Parent conferences are in full swing.  If you have not signed up for a time, please do so.  Please bring your child with so they can have an opportunity to show off their amazing work.

SRA Online
Students have been enjoying our online language program that provides customized and individualized instruction according to reading levels and interests.  We encourage all students to try it at home as well.  All students have recorded their username and password in their planners.  Simply go to www.connectEd.mcgraw-hill.com to login.  This login also works for those using the 6th and 7th grade math books and will provide additional lessons, resources and customized support.

Poetry Anthology
Our class is quickly becoming skilled at poetry and we decided to publish our first hardcover volume of selected poems. If you have any thick cardboard, card stock, fabric, or spray glue to donate for cover construction, that would be great!  

Holiday Activities
Please stay tuned to more information from our 6th and 7th graders about upcoming holiday events they are planning.  One of our new events will be a holiday Christmas shop which will be fundraiser for our 2 class outings this year.  If you have anything that you could donate for the children to sell, please let us know.

Moving into September

It's hard to believe that September has arrived.  We have been busy in multiple creative endeavors in the classroom.  Last week, our students filled their portfolios with poetry and this week they have been collaborating with a partner on creating a script for a short play, skit, or commercial.  The partnerships were carefully chosen to expand every child's circle of friends and build a more cohesive classroom community.  Our students will be performing their plays next week in class.  We are able to record the performances and place them on the homeroom app for those whose parents have a photo release on file.  We also began more formalized Spanish and art lessons this week, which have been received with enthusiasm.  We have talked about how learning a second language is able to change the structure of the brain to make greater connections in language, math, and even music.  Everyone was introduced to our new artist brushes and their purpose...

March and April Announcements

We hope everyone has had an enjoyable spring break. We are so excited for our upcoming activities, but also sad to report that one of our families is facing an unimaginable loss.  Please read below for more details. Sad News It is with a heavy heart that I must report that one of our parents, Audrey Baggs, is losing her battle against cancer.  We are explaining this loss to the children and are sharing with you the family's gofundme page to cover final expenses and transitions for the two children that attend our school.  The school cookbook, planned and soon-to-be published by Audrey's oldest daughter, will also be used as a fundraiser to support the children during this time of heartbreaking changes.  We are grateful for the kind words of support during this time and have asked our classroom community to come together in love and unity.  You can find the family gofundme page right  here . Finding Reliable Online Resources

By fourth grade, most students feel pretty comfortable using the internet to find answers to questions, what they may not realize is that not everything found on the internet is completely reliable.  This week, students will learn how to use the internet to find scholarly resources.  This means resources that are considered reliable enough to use for publication.  When we first had a talk about using the internet, students insisted that Wikipedia was the best place to go.  While even adults use Wikipedia for fast answers (myself included), using it to support facts being presented is not considered a valid source for published research because anyone with a computer can go in and change the information presented without fully backing up their facts.
