Show me Night and Other Events

Our class is so excited to show some of the Montessori works and lessons tonight.  Our first session is from 5 to 5:45 and second session is from 5:45 to 6:30.  If you need to come early or stay a little later, please let us know.

Also, we will pass out more information tonight about our upcoming events including our Mercado, Wax Museum, Phoenix Symphony trip, Science camp, and more.

We are so pleased with how fast everyone is working with their research projects and many are getting work done ahead of schedule.  We thank you for supporting your child at home with discussions about their research interests.  We are pleased at the growth every child has shown in initiative and independence as they research, discuss, and write about the person they are studying.

Wax Museum Coming Soon!

We hope everyone has received the hard copy of this important information as well as the field trip permission slip that is due this Friday. This announcement was also sent via email and we ask you to check your inbox to ensure we have your email address in our system.  Ms. Kathy and I have been receiving error messages with some emails.  We will put all of our class announcements online and will send them electronically in the future and we want to make sure everyone is up to date on the latest news in our classroom.   If you did not receive this in your email, please send us an email at MECrooom102@gmail.com so we can make sure you are accurately added to our list!

Over the next few weeks, the upper elementary will be researching important
people in current events and will create a living wax museum on the Friday before
Halloween (10-23-15).  Students will have time to work on this project in class, and
we will research the life of a person living today and their signicance to current events.
Students will need 3-5 scholarly resources, two of which must be books.

We are planning to visit the library in small groups on Monday, 9-21, to
gather our resources. Students must have a valid Mesa library card in their name
or their parent’s name in order to participate. Students who do not attend the field
trip will work with our Outdoor Environment teacher on their online resources and
will be required to get a minimum of three books for homework.  If you would like to
be a chaperone for this trip, please send us an email as soon as possible.

How you can support your student during each step of this research project:

Return the permission slip for the library trip as soon as possible and
make sure your child has a library card that is free from fines or holds
(they need their pin too).

Have discussions with your child about possible research topics and
guide them toward narrowing their choice. Students have already been told that
they may not choose a person who is strictly an actor or entertainer. Here are some
lists of important people that students may find useful in choosing their topic:

Have ongoing discussions about your child’s research to help strengthen
their understanding and help them begin using their own words for what
they have learned.

Help provide support in finding scholarly resources on the internet.
(They will have lessons and we will provide further guidance in this, but we
don’t have as many computers as we would like, so it is helpful to give your
child more time to hunt for appropriate resources at home).   The following
link has a guide describing what is considered a scholarly source:
http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~janzb/courses/scholarly1.htm

Help with putting together an outfit that matches their person
of interest (for example, they could be wear formal clothing for a presidential candidate, a lab coat for a scientist, etc).
This should be very simple—we do not expect expensive costumes (we will also
provide some time for this in class).

Obtain a trifold project board or similar presentation material.

Attend our open house on October 23, from 10am-11:15!

It is imperative that each child do the majority of their work with as little outside
assistance as possible.  Students will be compiling their research in class and
receiving as much guidance as necessary in order to become competent and
independent researchers.  Thanks in advance for your support!
