Our Busy Month of May

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that the school year is over in less than three weeks.  As usual, our classroom is bustling with activity until the last day of school.  Please take note of the following activities and deadlines for our publishing projects:

Class Yearbook
Our student editors are almost finished with our classroom yearbook and will send it to the printer this Friday!  It will be a 75 page full color book with photos of the children's work and activities.  Each student chose their own photos and work for a two page layout and other teams of editors put together spreads on other topics in the classroom.  It is always a pleasure to watch our students finish their own beautiful pages of the work that they are most proud of. The cost of the yearbook is $20.  We will send out order forms tomorrow.

Hardcover Books
Thank you to those who have brought in covers to bind our books.  Students are expected to have their stories typed by Friday. As the stories are typed, Ms. Adrienne and Liza are helping with formatting each story or poetry collection into a real hardcover book.  Each student will sew the pages together and decorate their covers themselves.  Because of a shortage of computers with Microsoft Office, as well as a lack of computers in general, we are asking students to type their final copies at home on their google docs.  We will then format the stories in Microsoft word with  the one computer we have available. We have decided to open our doors after school on Thursday and Friday until 4pm, for those who need to type their stories at school.  We encourage students to ask a family member to help with typing if their story is long or use talk to text features.  We will print all the pages at school.  If you want to do a color version on your home printer, please let me know and I can talk you through the process.

Friday Art
On Friday, thanks to a wonderful parent, we are going to make some beautiful scenes on canvas.  We are also encouraging students to finish up other works on canvases that they have been working on.  I have really enjoyed giving art lessons to this group of kids who have grown so much in understanding principles of shading and color theory.

Library
Next Tuesday is the last day of library.  Please be prepared to return your books.  We will send notices home after that time for any books not checked in.

Graduation and Luau
Next Friday, May 18th is our graduation ceremony and Luau. We apologize for the unfortunate date change that had to be made. We invite all parents to attend our performances of the class and a celebration of our students' growth and transformation.  We traditionally start the ceremony at 2pm, however, we can make it later if that helps other parents attend.  After graduation, we will begin final preparations for the Luau that begins seating at 5:30/6pm.  We are still in need of volunteers for this lovely night of food and fun entertainment.  Please see this link to sign up for a donation.  Also, we still have some tickets available.  Proceeds have helped with Camp Surf and will also help support other upper elementary activities. We hope to see everyone there to celebrate a particularly fine group of graduates.

6th Grade Trip
Parents, please make sure your child returns their forms for the 6th grade trip, leaving early on Monday, May 14.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.  Ms. Kathy and Ally will be in charge of it.

Spirit Week
Our last week of school is traditionally planned by the 6th graders.  Please stay tuned for more announcements from them.  Participation in all activities is dependent upon completing all classwork in a timely fashion.  Children who have not completed follow-up work may miss out.

Water Day
On Thursday, May 24, we will have water day from 11am to noon.  Please make sure your child has signed the release form and comes prepared with proper clothing and sun protections.

Parent Conferences
Report cards were sent home to those families unable to attend conference.  If you have any questions, or would still like to meet after school, please let us know.  Also, we hope you set aside some time to allow your child to show off some of their favorite works that they placed in their portfolios.

We are so thankful for all your support this year.  Montessori education is not possible without the combined strength and talents found from all families.  We could not do it without all your contributions, small and great, as well as your support in the home.  Beyond tangible contributions, your kind words of support go far in strengthening our hearts as we give our all in the classroom, day after day. Thanks again for choosing to send your child to our lovely school and making this a wonderful year.  Hope to see everyone at the Luau!

Sincerely,

Ms. Liza, Adrienne and Kathy
